We enter the world in perfect grace
No preconceived notions or bias
Of wealth, success, fame or race
No hatred, anger, or malice
It starts with a slap across the behind
To learn nothing can be taught without pain
We learn to cry and so we find
We can manipulate others for our own gain
We learn to crawl to get to things
Our mothers will not give
We learn to walk so we might know
A better way to live
We learn to run, too think, to try
To find what we are meant to be
We learn to hate, to steal, to lie
In our struggle to be free
We learn to love because we thought
We could not face the end alone
But everything must end, does it not
That’s the thing we’ve always known
firstly I love how you ryhme. it sits so well with me as I read it outloud. then the things you write about….simple everyday truths that need our urgent notice.

Thanks Gina, you have been a great source of encouragement and inspiration. I don’t want to sound like I’m one of those guys walking around with my thumbs under my suspenders saying, “well now, I might be just a poor country backyard kinda poet…” but that is who I am. I don’t know a lot about structure and imagery, I just let some words fall onto the paper and hope they make sense to someone.

And so am I Jerry, I am as mall town or in fact a small village girl who knows little of poetry form or art or writing but I know what sits well with my soul. English not being my first language is also a struggle to get the words right. But words tumble out because we have a lot inside that needs to be heard. And for those who hear us and understand it’s a great reward even if it’s an audience of one, that connection to another human is amazing! you write from the heart, that matters most. And you take from the ordinary, but that’s our lives isn’t it anyway! And they make lovely perfect sense when I read and think about my own life circumstances. Writing does increase our love for humanity.

Great thought provoking poetry Jerry. Does our struggle to be free keep us imprisoned?

I think I blame adulthood. Maybe we need to remain children.

Or at least keep a child’s eye and insight Jerry.

… Yes, always known, Jerry, yet we still fight to keep it at bay. Well expressed thoughts with a powerful ending.

I think so much of human behavior can be explained by our fear of death…
This is a touching poem and beautifully written. Thank you!

Thank you Ann. We are in a constant search for ways to cheat death, forgetting sometimes to just live life.

Exactly! One of my favorite sayings is, “Life is for living.” Sort of sums it all up….
